Prerequisites
The Arc Hydro Groundwater Toolkit requires the following:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
- ArcGIS 9.2 or later with .NET support installed
- ApFramework (from ESRI)
- XML Data Exchange (from ESRI)
- Arc Hydro (from ESRI)
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0
This is usually installed on most computers these days, but not necessarily if the computer is new. You can download the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 at: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=9832
ArcGIS 9.2 or later with .NET support
If Microsoft .NET 2.0 was installed on the computer prior to installing ArcGIS, then .NET support for ArcGIS will automatically be installed. However, if ArcGIS was installed before .NET 2.0 was installed, you have to go back and add support.
- Make sure .NET 2.0 is installed.
- Put the ArcGIS install DVD in the DVD drive.
- Go to the Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs
- Select ArcGIS Desktop and click on the Change button.
- Choose Modify.
- Select the option “Install .NET Support” and change the option so that it will be installed on the computer.
- Install .NET support.
ApFramework
The ApFramework is part of the water resources applications developed by ESRI’s Professional Services (water resources group). It is also a prerequisite for Arc Hydro (surface water). The ApFramework contains core data management functionality for Arc Hydro.
XML Data Exchange
The XML Data Exchange is part of the water resources applications developed by ESRI’s Professional Services (water resources group). It is also a prerequisite for Arc Hydro (surface water). The XML Data Exchange contains I/O routines for XML data input and output.
The XML Data Exchange requires Microsoft’s MSXML 4 components before it can be installed. This can be downloaded and installed from Microsoft.
Arc Hydro
Arc Hydro, also developed by ESRI’s Professional Services (water resources group), is a prerequisite for the Groundwater tools.
Downloading the Latest Version of the ESRI Professional Services Programs
To download the latest versions of the ApFramework, XML Data Exchange, and Arc Hydro, please visit the ESRI ftp site.
Connecting to the ESRI Web Site (for Water Utilities)
You will need to go to the ESRI FTP site, which is at ftp.esri.com. However, the Arc Hydro programs are all in a password protected area.
To log in to the FTP site, do one of the following:
If everything worked OK, you should see several new directories available to you.
Readme.doc at the FTP Site
In the root directory, there will be a Readme.doc file with the latest information on the current versions, how to install, how to uninstall, and the latest changes to the tools. The filename will have the date of when the file was last updated in its name, so if the file was updated on October 2, 2008, the name of the file will be “Readme10022008.doc.”
Most Recent ApFramework Install
The most recent ApFramework install program will be found at: ApFramework/Setup9.2_9.3/Z082808/setup_08282008.EXE (or most current date). The directory name (Z082808) indicates it was updated on Aug 28, 2008. There may be a newer version there when you go to the FTP site.
Most Recent XML Data Exchange Install
The most recent XML Data Exchange install program will be found at: XMLDataExchange/Setup92/Z011508/setup.EXE (or most current date). The directory name (Z011508) indicates it was updated on Jan 15, 2008. There may be a newer version there when you go to the FTP site.
Most Recent Arc Hydro Install
The most recent Arc Hydro install program will be found at: ArcHydro/Setup9.2_9.3/Version 1.3 Beta October 24 2008/setup_10242008.exe (or most current date). The directory name (Version 1.3 Beta October 24 2008) indicates when it was updated. There may be a newer version there when you go to the FTP site.
Proper Order of Installing and Uninstalling the Prerequisites and Arc Hydro Groundwater
The order in which the prerequisites and the Arc Hydro Groundwater Toolkit are installed matters. The most detailed info about the prerequisites from ESRI can be found in the Readme.doc file on the ESRI FTP site, but a summary of that appears below. Also, if you need to uninstall portions of the toolkit, the order matters there as well.
Order for a New Install
Follow this order if you are installing everything for the first time:
- ApFramework
- XML Data Exchange
- Arc Hydro (surface water)
- Arc Hydro Groundwater
Order for Uninstalling or Updating/Re-Installing Portions
Applications should be uninstalled in reverse order, up to the program you are updating or re-installing. Then, the new installs should be done in the same order listed above.
For example, if you are updating just Arc Hydro Groundwater (the last item listed to install), just uninstall the old Arc Hydro Groundwater program, then install the new one.
If there is a new update to Arc Hydro (surface water) but not the ApFramework and XML Data Exchange, you will first need to uninstall Arc Hydro Groundwater, then Arc Hydro. Install the update to Arc Hydro, and then re-install Arc Hydro Groundwater.
