Reservoir Water Quality Modeling with CE-QUAL-W2

Aquaveo has worked with the US Bureau of Reclamation to develop a water quality model of East Canyon reservoir near Salt Lake City, Utah and the area surrounding this reservoir.

WMS uses the reservoir's bathymetry data and its surrounding elevation data to compute the parameters required to generate a CE-QUAL-W2 bathymetry file. WMS also generates the other input files required for CE-QUAL-W2. By combining the results of other watershed-based water quality models (such as HSPF or GSSHA) with a CE-QUAL-W2 model, we can determine the sources of reservoir pollution and run different scenarios to find ways to mitigate reservoir and river pollution. The vegetation types for the area draining to in the East Canyon reservoir were used as part of this modeling process:

Using WMS, we can visualize the effects of changes in the watershed and changes in pollutants entering the reservoir on the reservoir water temperatures and chemistry.

Aquaveo has also been involved in the development of CE-QUAL-W2 water quality models of several other reservoirs in the United States and Mexico.
