SMS-The Surfacewater Modeling System

SMS is designed to serve as a pre- and post-processor for a wide range of numerical surface water modeling systems. SMS addresses surface water problems from one dimensional step backwater for profile computations to complex two and three dimensional hydrodynamics for computing flow fields, inundated areas, sedimentation and constituent migration (water quality). SMS is used at thousands of sites including federal, state, private and, international sites.
SMS includes tools for developing conceptual models for one and two dimensional numerical models. This allows the automatic creation of cross sectional data, finite element networks and finite difference grids. SMS also provides tools for model editing, calibration and visualization.
SMS includes interfaces for the following models:
- TABS-MD: Sponsored by the USACE Engineering Research Development Center (ERDC). Includes RMA2, RMA4 and SED2D-WES. For riverine and estuarine applications with hydrodynamics and water quality analysis.
- FST2DH: Sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Model includes easy to use methods for representing highway structures such as piers, culverts and weirs.
- CMS (The Coastal Modeling System) - Sponsored by the Coastal Inlets Research Program (CIRP) at ERDC. Modules inlcude:
- Flow(2D): 2D tidal hydrodynamics with sediment transport and morphology (Previously M2D).
- Wave: 2D Phase averaged wave model (Previously WABED).
- CGWAVE - Phase resolving harbor wave model.
- BOUSS-2D - Boussinesq wave/current numerical flume.
- ADCIRC - Tidal hydraulics with storm surge capabilities.
- Generic Interface - allows application of custom models.
- Hydro-AS_2D - riverine hydraulics
SMS is distributed commercially through Environmental Modeling Systems Incorporated (EMS-I). EMS-I also sponsors regularly scheduled training courses featuring SMS. If you are interested in downloading, evaluating, or purchasing SMS, please visit the EMS-I site.
